How Does A Search Engine Know How Popular Your Website Is?

A backlink is a link back to your website from another website. Google values the company you keep, i.e. the site that link back to you. Your search engine ranking cannot be harmed by having too many links back to your own site. In very basic terms, the more popular your site is, the more likely that somebody will link back to you.

So how do you get somebody else to link back to your website? The simple fact is that you cannot force another site to link to your site, however many sites actively encourage linking. A good example of this is article directories. Article directories gain popularily for their own sites by having a lot of content. In return for providing that content, they allow the writer of the article to have a link back to their own site.

Using my own website as an example, SEO Cardiff is a keyword phrase that I am trying to rank for with one of my websites. If you click the link, you will go to my website. This is called an anchor text link. Google measures the links automatically and I get the benefit of an inbound link to my website

The actual benefit that my website gains as a result of this hyperlink varies according to many factors. Probably the most critical of these is the pagerank of the website that the link comes from. Google ranks websites according to popularily, namely page views and rank. So to put things simply, you should try and get links from sites that have high pagerank if at all possible. The number of links is significant, however of huge significance is the quality of the site that links to you.

A simple way to measure the number of links that any website in truth has coming back to it is the Yahoo site explorer tool. Simply search for this tool online and input your website into the search tool. You will see the links that Yahoo indexes. This is not 100% accurate, howveer has the same level of inaccuracy for all websites therefore is a great tool to use when comparing different websites
